The IntuGuard System at Christchurch Hospital

BUILDINGS WITH ELEVATED HYGENIC NEEDS

The remediation of Christchurch hospital is currently the biggest hospital reconstruction project in the country.

The main campus is made up of multiple buildings constructed over a period of 60 years, developed at different times and under different iterations of the NZ Building Code (NZBC). Moreover, the 2010/2011 earthquakes caused severe damages to the hospital facilities.

As part of a detailed engineering analysis it became apparent that there were many deficiencies associated with the passive fire systems within the buildings. This has resulted in an urgency to remediate the hospital buildings.

OBJECTIVES:

  • Ensure Compliance. Building Quality and Longevity

  • Provide Ongoing Quality Healthcare

  • Guarantee Staff Safety

Challenges

Compliance - Increasingly stringent building requirements (NZBC)

High Complexity - The very divers building stock - different ages, stages of development and additions makes the of remediation complex and often restricts access greatly.

Time constraints - The CDHB has to continue to meet the needs of its population despite the damaged infrastructure. The limited hospital capacity in conjunction with a population that is more fragile makes fixing the buildings in a timely manner imperative.

Financial constraints - Applying the limited funds in a way that maximises the outcome of the capital expenditure.

Live hospital - The hospital cannot be closed down for renovations. This leads to a heightened complexity when fixing the building while it is needed to deliver care. Disruptions need to be reduced to a minimum and complex logistics and timing managed accordingly.

Passive Fire Solution

The CDHB decided that Tech Coatings' lntuGuard System was the best solution for updating the fire separating elements (e.g. riser shafts, emergency corridors, or other required fire cells) in the hospital, addressing the above challenges while focussing on the overarching objectives.

BENEFITS:

  • Estimated Completion Time down to 5 Years (from 20)

  • Considerably reduced Project Costs

  • Effortless Clinical Sign-Off by Infection Control Department

  • Tested & Endorsed NZBC Passive Fire Compliance

A look at the completed finish

“Tech Coatings was quick to recognise the unique challenges we are facing at Christchurch Hospital and offered the approach we required – a compliant solution that would also fit in with our highly elevated hygienic needs as a hospital.

The team has gone the extra mile to support us to keep project deadlines and solve challenges that came up along the way and their ongoing support is unparalleled.

Tech Coatings has a fantastic team, but most important for me, is that Shane has been truly invested in making our project successful, and it is obvious they love what they do and want to see their clients succeed.”
